As part of activities marking the 2025 celebration of the International Day of the Family, the Sub-divisional Delegation of Women Empowerment and the Family, MINPPROF has partner with the Konye Council to celebrate the first free mass marriage in Konye, the seat of Konye Sub-division.
The event that took place on May 15th, 2025 at the Konye Council business center legalizing the marriages of 9 couples, was witnessed by the Mayor of the Konye Council, DR Barrister Musima George Lobe.Others present were the 2nd Deputy Mayor of the Konye Council, Mandi Lawrence Balimba, Madam Emma Njonji Epse Musima, Civil status secretary, Martin Bangume, Traditional authorities and a cross section of the population.
Addressing the Couples, the Sub-Delegate of Women’s Empowerment and the family noted that it is a bold step taking by the couples to improve upon their life’s. Stating that, the celebration comes a day prior to the celebration of the International day of the family.
She beaconed the couples, stressing on the importance of the family and the role it plays in the society.
While counseling the couples, the Lord Mayor of the Konye Council, Urged them to take the exercise serious as he said, “marriage is a union that has divine value as it was ordained by God”.
To Mayor Mandi Lawrence who conducted the vows taking and the wearing of rings, marriage is sacred and so couples must protect it jealously. He as well used the occasion to cautioned the various wives to submit to their husbands who are bred winners of the family.
The ceremony that is done annually, helps in strengthening family bonds and community values. It also serves as a platform to promote the importance of legalizing marital unions, particularly for couples who have long lived together without formal recognition.
This edition of the International Day of the Family was commemorated under the theme: “Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development.”
The Konye Council and the Sub -divisional Delegation of Women Empowerment and the Family have continued to demonstrate commitment in fostering social inclusion while promoting the legal and social rights of families within the municipality.
The 31st edition of the International family day was celebrated on the theme ” Cultivate peace and solidarity for a united, inclusive and prosperous Cameroon”.
